Police Release Names In Dickson Murder-Suicide

Posted: Updated:

DICKSON, Tenn. - Detectives in Dickson were on the scene Monday of a murder-suicide at a local nursing home.

Police were called out to Dickson Healthcare on North Charlotte Street in Dickson just before 4:30 p.m. Monday.  When they arrived on the scene, they discovered two people had been shot and killed.

Detectives said the victim was Eileen Hotvedt, 86, a patient at the nursing home.

Officials said Hotvedt's son, Gary Hotvedt , 60, came to the facility planning to kill his mother and himself.  A note recovered at the scene stated his intentions. He indicated he was aware that his mother's health was declining and was upset about it. Police said the suspect's note said he planned to put his mother out of her misery.

Investigators also said he made the decision to take her on a short walk, and then he shot her and himself. Both of them died at the scene.

Both Eileen and Gary lived in Charlotte. There were no eye witnesses to the incident but the police department did receive numerous calls of shots fired in the area.
