MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - A student at Middle Tennessee State University was robbed at gunpoint and pistol whipped Tuesday night.
MTSU Police were called out to the Scarlett Commons Apartments just before 9 p.m. Tuesday.
Officials said that a student was robbed at gunpoint near the dorms. During the robbery, the student and man got into a fight over the gun. At one point the student took control of the weapon but then lost it to the robber. That's when the man hit the student in the head.
Police described the suspect as a white man, about 5'6 to 5'8, with a goatee, wearing blue jeans and a hoodie. The suspect was carrying a black and silver small hand gun.
Raiders for the Right to Bear Arms released a statement overnight saying students should have the right to carry a concealed weapon.
Organizer Derek Mumphery said "It's unfortunate that in gun-free zones like the MTSU campus, only criminals have access to firearms. Raiders for the Right to Bear Arms is fighting to allow law-abiding citizens the right to carry on campus in order to protect themselves in the event an armed gunman attempts to break the law."
Mumphery's organization is loosely affiliated with the national Students for Concealed Carry on Campus group.
