Colleges Applying For .xxx Web Addresses

COLUMBIA, Tenn.- If you use the Internet you're familiar with terms like .com, .org, and .gov, but there is also .xxx It's a domain extension intended for adult sites and thousands of businesses, schools and organizations are applying for them.

When you search for a name on the Internet you're never quite sure what you'll get.

"Your name can be used in an inappropriate way.  Your name can be used in a way that you don't want to reflect on the college," said Columbia State Community college Associate Vice President Emily Siciensky.

Tennessee's community colleges are registering web addresses you can associate with the school using the new domain extension .xxx.

"What a lot of us did was register domain names that would normally be associated to our college to prevent it from being registered through adult entertainment," said Siciensky.

The fear exists, because the college has learned it's better to be proactive when it comes to protecting the school's name. Any .xxx extension conjures up a certain image.

"Yeah, sounds like an adult site to me with xxx at the end," said Chelsea Howell a student at Columbia State Community College.

The college has learned it's difficult to repair the damage. Siciensky said Columbia State was associated with some unflattering and offensive videos on Youtube a few months back.

Legal action to remove the school's name took several months.

"I mean we have a good reputation.  We're a great school.  We don't want our name associated with certain content," said Siciensky.

Several schools are applying for these domain extensions including U-T Knoxville and Vanderbilt University. They have until Friday.

The cost of each domain is about $100. Columbia State is registering not only its name, but mascot as well.
