David Leon Graves
SGT Harold Cooley
TROUSDALE COUNTY, Tenn. – A sheriff's deputy was shot in the face in Trousdale County early Monday morning.
It happened just after midnight in the 100 block of Coker Lane in Hartsville.
Sgt. Harold Cooley was responding to a domestic call at the home about a fight between David Graves and his girlfriend.
When Sgt. Cooley arrived at the home, Graves allegedly refused to put down his weapon and eventually opened fire, striking the sergeant in the face.
Deputies fired back, injuring Graves.
Both Cooley and Graves were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with critical injuries.
"You don't hear stuff like this out in small towns, and this is the first time in 18 years that I've heard stuff quite like this, especially so close to home. Harold lives just down the road close to here. I talk to his kid, his wife... and for something like this to happen - it's pretty dramatic," said Dave Fluehe.
The Sheriff told NewsChannel 5 that he had spoken with Cooley and he is expected to recover.
The Trousdale Sheriff's Office said Graves does have a criminal history.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation of the case.
