Second Person Dies From Injuries In 55-Car Pileup

Posted: Updated:

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – A second person has died from injuries sustained during a 55-vehicle crash on Vietnam Veterans Boulevard in Sumner County last week.

Officials with the Hendersonville Police Department identified the deceased as 62-year-old James Ziegler from Old Hickory.

Ziegler was not transported to the hospital after the crash Thursday. Police said he drove his vehicle home after being interviewed by investigators.

The exact cause of death was not available pending an autopsy report from the State Medical Examiner's office.

Four crashes, which involved about 55 cars, were caused by thick fog and icy patches on the roadway. 28-year-old Paul Warren died when his car slammed into the back of a U.S. Mail truck.

At least 18 people were transported to the hospital, with an unknown number of others treated on the scene.

More than 130 additional vehicles were stuck on a roughly two-mile stretch because of the massive pileup.

The crash is still under investigation.
