Last Minute Toy Store Needs Last Minute Help

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Thousands of families without enough money to buy their kids gifts for Christmas depend on a local organization each year. With less than two weeks out from the start of the Last Minute Toy Store and so much is still needed.

The wheels are in motion and time is drawing near for the beginning of the Last Minute Toy Store.

For the 17th year, the 61st Avenue United Methodist Church will host the event.

Less than two weeks away from doors opening and Nita Haywood says donations aren't even close to what is needed.

"No, we don't have anywhere near the amount of toys we need," said Haywood. "This small room we are in now will probably need to be filled four or five times completely to serve our need."

Help is coming from places like Toys for Tots, but it's donations from the community that keep the Last Minute Toy Store operating.

Last year 4,600 Nashville families were helped.

It's a little church and I thought what an incredible mission for a little church," said Laura Landress.

It's supporters like Landress who is back for the three year to give to those who aren't able to give for themselves.

Landress smiles and says, "It makes me feel so good to do this. I have (older) children myself, so being able to give toys to other children really makes me feel good."

The need is especially great every year for teenagers and kids under the age of 4.

They are often the forgotten groups, but Haywood says it's the faith in the community that allows them to pull this off each year.

"We continue to do this because this is what Jesus calls us to do, to serve others, to be with people," said Haywood.

The Last Minute Toy Store will start on December 18th – 21st.

Tickets will be given to families, first come first serve, starting at 6 a.m.

You will have to line up outside here at the church and families typically start showing up 24 hours before tickets are given out.

If you need toys you can call (615) 463-0191. No pre-registration is needed, but parents/guardians must bring:
