NASHVILLE, Tenn.- More
than 30 homeless people have died this year alone, so Saturday, organizers of a
Homeless Memorial wanted to make sure they are not forgotten.
Often times the homeless
spend a lot of time alone. Saturday's event was meant to show that someone else
cares, and their lives matter.
At the event the homeless
were referred to by their names and called friends and neighbors. For the first
time, the memorial was held at Centennial Park.
In the last three weeks
alone, three homeless people have died. One was hit by a train, another succumbed
to an illness while another was murdered. They're part of the more than 30
homeless people who have passed away this year.
Some in attendance shared
personal stories in their honor.
"What we're trying to do
is to say that everybody entitled to dignity and respect and that's what we're
focusing on is to remember those people today that are no longer with us but to
let them know that everybody's life is valuable," said organizer Steve Reiter.
Previously the event was
held at Riverfront Park, but had to be moved.
Organizers hope to spread the word and continue having the memorial at
Centennial Park.
