NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Higher Education Commission is recommending that colleges and universities pay part of the cost for campus construction projects.
The commission proposal that would also speed up construction planning is on the agenda at a Tuesday afternoon meeting in Nashville.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports that THEC has the recommendation in a five-year plan that leaders at both systems hope will be financed with a bond issue that could total $1.5 billion.
The proposal includes a $126 million science building at Middle Tennessee State University and a $94 million science laboratory building at UT Knoxville.
UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said the match could come from private donations and grants and a pool of $4.8 million from increased fees that students agreed to pay last year for facility upgrades.
