NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP/NewsChannel5) - A mid-state couple has filed suit against a local doctor,
claiming he delivered their baby but left him for dead in a plastic bin.
The suit filed this week against John O'Donnell III at NorthCrest
Medical Center in Springfield said the infant was born with irregular breathing
and that O'Donnell decided on his own that the baby was not viable after he was born.
After being placed in the bin, a nurse who passed by the area a
few hours later noticed the baby was gasping for breath. It was only then that doctors tended to the baby.
The baby was transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center
in Nashville for specialized care. The lawsuit claims the infant suffered a
brain injury and other injuries because of the doctor's negligence.
"Matthew has a permanent brain injury as a result of this, as
we say in the complaint. And he has several problems, which we'll talk about at
another time. Yet the family is doing relatively well," said attorney
Randy Kinnard.
Matthew spent more than three months at Vanderbilt before going home.
Officials at NorthCrest Medical Center said O'Donnell no longer
works there. They said he's been
gone for two and a half years.
