Legislative Session To Test Haslam Assertiveness

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The second session of the 107th General Assembly starting Tuesday will test Gov. Bill Haslam's increased assertiveness with fellow Republicans leading the legislature.

Haslam is beginning his second year in office by taking a more active role in legislative matters while House Speaker Beth Harwell and Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey jockey for position with each other and the governor.

First on the legislative agenda is redistricting, which could come up for a vote as early as Thursday.

Haslam is releasing his legislative package Tuesday soon after the session is gaveled to order. The governor has already exerted control over school vouchers and changing teacher evaluation standards by calling for formal studies that push off decisions until next year.

Haslam last week announced a package of anti-crime proposals.
