Trailer Carrying 36 Horses Overturns On I-40

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A tractor trailer hauling 36 horses overturned on Interstate 40 outside Nashville Monday evening.

The crash happened around 5:20 p.m. on I-40 at mile marker 182, just before the Highway 96 exit. Officials said a tractor trailer carrying approximately 36 horses overturned. Tennessee Highway Patrol State Troopers worked to keep the trailer intact and the horses under control.

Police said the driver of the trailer, Mance Reed,  fell asleep at the wheel veered off the road and lost control of the truck. The vehicle rolled onto its side and completely blocked the westbound lanes of I-40.

Reed was said to have suffered minor injuries in the crash and refused to be taken to a hospital. 

The investigation into the crash was ongoing. Police said charges were pending. 

The horses were said to be from Three Angels Farms in Lebanon. Four of them died in the crash.

Interstate 40 was closed for several hours while emergency crew worked to clear the scene and remove the animals.
