Self-Proclaimed Satanist Talks From Jail About Abuse Charges

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- A self-confessed Satanist is behind bars charged with abusing a five-year-old boy. Detectives suspect it may have been part of a satanic ritual or torture.
"This is a very serious child abuse case," said Kyle Evans with the Murfreesboro Police Dept.
Evans said Police Officers performing a welfare check arrested John Lotts, Jr. for child abuse at a Murfreesboro apartment complex late last week. Police also arrested the child's mother Elizabeth Hoagland for failing to protect her son.
The police report stated doctors discovered multiple injuries including a laceration to the liver and kidney contusions. When a doctor asked the child what happened and he replied, "I am not allowed to say."
Evans said Lotts surprised detectives during interrogation.
"During the interview Mr. Lotts actually produced a red card and declared himself a member of the Church of Satan," said Evans.
Detectives are now investigating whether the child abuse was some type of satanic ritual.
"No, absolutely not," said Lotts in an exclusive jailhouse interview with NewsChannel 5.
Lotts admitted to harming the child after losing his temper, but said his Satanism had nothing to do with what happened. He also said he's sorry he hurt the child.
"The most I can hope for is that he forgets all about me as quickly as possible and goes on with his life," said Lotts.
The child is recovering in state custody.
Police said it is difficult to confirm if Lotts is part of the Church of Satan. The web site said members names are kept in confidence. The web site also clearly states that it is wrong to harm little children.
Lotts is being held on $175,000 bond.
He is also a convicted Tennessee sex offender and may now also be charged with violating the sex offender law.
