Commission Rejects Controversial Propane Facility

MILLERSVILLE, Tenn.  – The Millersville City Commission rejected a controversial ordinance to allow a propane facility to come to town.

They made their decision after listening to public testimony Tuesday night.

Many people who live near the site have been fighting a neighbor they simply don't want.

"It could really become a nightmare if an incident were to occur," said Carl Sumruld, president of Sumner County Concerned Citizens, a group that strongly opposes the facility planned within a half-mile or less of many homes.

They point to recent fires or explosions at similar facilities across the country and what a similar crisis could mean here.

"We're not concerned about the frequency of these accidents, we're concerned about the severity," Sumruld said Tuesday.

Residents were operating on a lot of "what ifs". What if the propane facility is built? What if it explodes? That means hundreds of homes would have to be evacuated down narrow Loretta Drive. Emergency Managers said in a crisis, highways and even the interstate would have to be shut down as well.

Last October Millersville Mayor Dan Toole said they city cannot discriminate against any business trying to move to town. Calls to the Mayor and the owner of the propane company, Advanced Propane, Inc., weren't immediately returned Tuesday.
