NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Students at Whites Creek High School planted tree in memory of former Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Wangari Maathai's honor Thursday.
Wangari Maathai spent her lifetime fighting for equality and created a tree planting campaign across her native Kenya. Maathai won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
Student members of the Whites Creek High School Academy of Public Service Program were also honored in the program by the Metro Beautification and Environment Commission for their efforts to promote sustainability and environmental stewardship.
In December the students participated in a sustainability fair and also watched a documentary film honoring Maathai's legacy.
Metro Beautification and Environment Commission gave the students Baldcypress tree seedlings at the screening and announced plans to plant a tree in Nashville to honor Maathai.
