BRENTWOOD, Tenn.- Brentwood city leaders call a controversial billboard, illuminated for the very first time this week an electronic eyesore that's distracting drivers.
Drivers said it's hard to miss, that brightly lit sign near the intersection of Franklin Road and Old Hickory Boulevard. Its located just 12 feet outside Brentwood City limits and city leaders want it gone.
"It's distracting, first of all," said one driver.
"It's like having a plasma, a big screen plasma, right in front of you. It stands out way too much," said another.
Brentwood city leaders have been trying to get rid of the massive sign here for nearly a decade. The 12 foot by 48 foot billboard became even more of a problem since the ads turned electronic.
"Even though this billboard is just outside city limits, it's so noticeable as you're coming into Brentwood, and really interferes with the aesthetics of Brentwood," said Roger Horner, Brentwood City Attorney.
Because the billboard sits just outside Brentwood City limits, it's the Metro Zoning Board of Appeals that will ultimately decide what happens to it, but Horner hopes that Metro will listen to the city's pleas and remove the sign.
Metro is planning to file that appeal on Monday morning. Brentwood's city attorney said he'd been hoping Metro would intervene, because of the precedent this might set regarding electronic billboards.
