COLUMBIA, Tenn. – A student has been taken into custody after a teacher found a suspicious device in a bathroom at Spring Hill High School on Thursday morning.
The bomb squad and Hazmat along with the Maury County Sheriff's Office were called out to the school around 9 a.m.
Maury County School officials said that a "device" was found in a second floor bathroom. All students were evacuated from the area and the school was placed on a soft lockdown.
A detective described the package as being wrapped in what looks like aluminum foil with a fuse sticking out of it.
Around 11:45 a.m., the "device" was rendered safe. During their investigation, a 15-year-old student came forward and confessed to making two devices out of gunpowder and fireworks. He then said he tried to flush them down the toilet, but one would not go down.
He also told investigators that he did not want to hurt anyone, but he did it as a joke, according to school officials.
The student was charged with possession of a prohibited device/possession of weapon on school grounds.
The lockdown was lifted shortly before 12:45 p.m.
