State Senator Campfield's Comments Drawing Criticism

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - A Tennessee lawmaker's comments about homosexuality and AIDs during a satellite radio interview are drawing criticism.

Republican State Senator Stacey Campfield was interviewed by liberal radio host and gay rights blogger, Michelangelo Signorile.

During the interview, Campfield called the issue of gay teens being bullied "the biggest lark out there".

He also offered up a highly debatable theory on the origin of AIDS, attributing it to "the homosexual community" and attributed to a homosexual having sex with an animal.

He went on to add that it was "virtually impossible ... to contract AIDS through heterosexual sex."

Those statements have not been well-received by Tennessee's gay community.

Tennessee Equality Project's Chris Sanders said that such statements are a misrepresentation of how most Tennesseans feel.

NewsChannel 5 contacted Stacey Campfield to see if he would clarify his statements, or if he were misquoted in any way. As of Thursday night, he had not returned our call.
