Incredible Story Of Survival For "Miracle Man"

COLUMBIA, Tenn. -- Surendra Patel knows he's lucky to be alive.

Incredible surveillance video from his Columbia Market tells the story.   In December, a car plowed through the front door of the market and hit him. The video played around the world and people have started calling Patel the "Miracle Man" because he survived.

The video was taken early in December when Columbia Police said Eric Whitaker plowed his pick-up into the Columbia Market on Hampshire Pike.  They said he was trying to rundown his ex-girlfriend.

The video showed Whitaker missed the woman, but the car collides with the store owner and clerk Surendra Patel.  Patel was crushed under debris, but then somehow emerged and walked away.

For weeks no one heard from him,  but he agreed to an exclusive interview with NewsChannel 5. Patel wanted to share his secret to survival.

"It was a miracle," he said.  "I walk at least two miles every day. Two miles." He credits that exercise and diet for keeping him in the shape that allowed him to get up after getting crushed by the car with only some broken ribs.

"I am a vegetarian.  No meat, only vegetables," said Patel.

The market was rebuilt and reopened for business the last week of December.

Patel said he is back to work now part-time.

Whitaker, the driver of the truck, was charged with multiple crimes including attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated domestic assault.
