Warm Weather Brings Early Bugs, Blooms

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The recent warm weather woke up most of the Mid-State as many headed to local parks to enjoy the sunshine.

But the mild temps also woke up something else, something many weren't prepared to see just yet.

Pest control companies like Honor Guard said they're busy dealing with the early return of ants, wasps, gnats and flies.

"Now we're basically doing the same treatment we would be doing in the Spring and Summer times which is a little bit more aggressive. Now we don't know what we expect to find," said Route Technician Ron Obney.

Obney said he'll gladly take the job security, and expected the season to get even busier as the months go on.

Gardens could be in danger, depending on how the weather turns.

David Bates owns Bates Nursery. He said the temps were causing plants to start growing early.

"That spells trouble if cold weather returns and too much warm weather has preceded it. That can do a lot of damage to plants," said Bates.

Contrary to popular belief, officials at the Metro Health Department said warm weather in the middle of winter does not increase the number of flu and cold cases. Allergies are not really affected either.
