Interstate 40 West Reopens As Fallen Rocks Removed

Posted: Updated:

COVE CREEK, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina motorists have free sailing again on Interstate 40 through the mountains after crews cleared away rock slides that blocked the highway.

All lanes of I-40 westbound reopened Sunday in Haywood County after a about 600 tons of rock fell onto the road this week. An earlier slide of mud and rocks about eight miles away in Tennessee continues to keep one of two westbound lanes closed for repair.

A massive rock slide on I-40 in North Carolina in October 2009 closed the interstate for six months.
