NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Police are investigating a case where a homeowner took justice into his own hands after he shot a man he claimed was breaking into his home Sunday morning.
It happened early Sunday morning along South 19th Street. The homeowner, Aaron Harris, 36, said two men were trying to break in, so he got out a shotgun, fired a couple of warning rounds. Harris said he yelled" Freeze" which prompted one of the suspects, Michael D. Brewer, to stop.
According to police while trying to subdue Brewer until police arrived, Harris saw Brewer's accomplice Stephen Mayo driving a red pick-up truck into his yard. Police said that Harris yelled for Mayo to stop, and when Mayo got out of the truck Harris fired two shotgun blasts at him. Mayo was shot in the head.
"It ought to send a message. [To] be honest with you, I don't think that guy was playing with the gun. They shouldn't have tried to break into his house. I mean that's what he was telling the police," said neighbor Steven Veach.
Mayo was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Police said a warrant charging him with aggravated burglary was outstanding. Brewer was booked into the Davidson County Jail and charged with aggravated burglary.
The suspect was in critical condition at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
