Facebook Reunites High School Sweethearts After 43 Years

ASHLAND CITY,  Tenn. - An Ashland City couple has credited Facebook with a reunion more than 40 years in the making.  David and Jeanne Boyd were high school sweethearts in the 1960s.

"She was the prettiest girl on the dance floor," David said about the day they met.  "And I said oh, that's my girl."

The two dated back then and were even engaged to be married.  Then, David joined the military and was sent to Vietnam.

"I went with his mom and kissed him goodbye and he got on the plane," Jeanne recalls.  "It just was more than I could take."

The couple lost touch during the war and when David returned, they both married other people.

"I hadn't spoken to her in 43 years or so," said David.

Then in September 2011, he received a friend request from Jeanne on Facebook.  Her husband had passed away a few years ago, as had David's wife.

"I never dreamed this would happen," said Jeanne.  "Never give up, it can possibly happen, just never give up."

Their Facebook friendship quickly turned into marathon phone conversations, text messages, and a few long-distance visits.  Jeanne had moved to Georgia years ago, while David was still living in Ashland City.

A few weeks before the New Year, David surprised Jeanne with a proposal.

"I asked her to marry me on the first of the year," he said.  "I waited all those years, and finally got what I want and started on the first of the year. That's our New Year's resolution, I suppose."

Ironically, David's computer crashed not long after he and Jeanne first re-connected, so if the friend request had come just a few weeks later, he might've missed it.  They believe that's yet another sign they were meant to be.

"It's kinda like Cinderella, you put the shoe on and it fit!" said Jeanne.

With their families combined, the couple stays busy with their own kids, who are now adults, plus 15 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Jeanne is now in the process of moving from Georgia back to Ashland City.
