NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A record number of tornadoes hit Tennessee in 2011.

The National Weather Service said there were 113 confirmed tornadoes last year in the state, resulting in 33 fatalities.

Forecaster Bobby Boyd said that was the largest number of tornadoes since record keeping on them began in 1916.

The number far eclipsed the previous record year of 1974, when 57 tornadoes struck in the state, all but two of them during a super outbreak on April 3-4. There were 47 fatalities that year.

The deadliest year in Tennessee was 1952, when 22 tornadoes struck, mostly in West Tennessee, killing 70 people.
