WOODBURY, Tenn. – A 28-year-old man who was shot by deputies from the Cannon County Sheriff's Office has died from his injuries.
The incident happened Monday around 10:15 p.m. at a home on Petty Gap Road in a remote part of Cannon County, south of Woodbury and about 20 miles southeast of Murfreesboro.
Officials with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation told NewsChannel 5 that two deputies responded to reports of a black truck with stolen metal in the bed.
When they arrived on scene, they found the man in a black truck "doing donuts" in his front yard.
The deputies told investigators they opened fire when they felt the man attempted to run them over. Neither deputy was injured.
The man was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he later died. Officials were waiting until family could be notified before releasing the man's name.
It was unclear if stolen metal was found in the bed of the truck, or if the man lived at the residence.
The TBI was called in to investigate and planned to hand the case over to the District Attorney General to review and determine if the deputies actions were justified.
The names of the deputies involved were not released.
