Elderly Man Won’t Face Charges In Alzheimer's Beating Death

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Police said an elderly man accused of beating his roommate to death with a cane will not face any charges.

Metro Police and the Tennessee Department of Human Services were called in to investigate the attack on Christmas Eve. 89-year-old Orville Hayes attacked and killed his 83-year-old roommate, Donald Reeder, at an assisted living facility in Madison.

Relatives said both men suffered from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

The Davidson County District Attorney's office made the announcement Tuesday. A spokesperson said the decision made was based on Hayes' deteriorated mental and physical health.
