FILE PhotoNASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - State officials said federal funds are available for the 2012 Summer Food Service Program.
The program is intended to assure that children and individuals with disabilities, who rely on free and reduced-price meals during the school year, have access to nutritious meals during the summer.
According to the Tennessee Department of Human Services, new sponsors are needed to partner in the initiative. Eligible sponsors include schools, private nonprofit organizations, government entities and nonprofit residential camps. Sponsors are reimbursed on a per-meal basis.
Last year, 57 sponsors served 2.7 million meals to children at 526 sites across the state.
