Police Make Arrest in Vanderbilt Rape Case

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Metro Police have arrested a suspect in the Friday night rape of a 21-year-old Vanderbilt student.

Not only are detectives charging this suspect in Friday evening's assault inside a campus parking garage, but they say he was brazen enough to attempt the same thing three times early Sunday morning.

Tyrone Batts is a convicted felon and was convicted last July of indecent exposure inside a West End parking garage. He also has a drug conviction on his record. According to Metro's Sex Crimes unit, he was busy again Sunday morning.

Police say around 4:30 a.m. he approached a woman in her car inside Baptist Hospital's mid-state garage. Police say he tried to sexually assault her, but he failed. He did manage to take her cell phone.

Then at 6 a.m., detectives say Batts shoved a woman to the ground inside Vanderbilt Medical Center's garage on 21st Avenue South. He allegedly took her cell phone as well.

Then, at 7:10, Batts is charged with approaching another woman inside Baptist's 21st Avenue North parking garage and robbing her of her work-bag.

Metro Police say during an interview Sunday morning, Tyrone Batts confessed to Friday evening's rape and robbery of a 21-year-old Vanderbilt student inside the Terrace Place parking garage.

Sunday afternoon, Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson praised security officers at both hospitals and his Sex Crimes detectives for being able to make such a swift arrest.

Even though Tyrone Batts has a criminal record, detectives want to keep his mug-shot private until his alleged victims can see him in a suspect line-up.
