Occupy Nashville Moves To Public Square

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Metro Nashville owned property appears to be the next stop for the Occupy Nashville movement.

On Monday afternoon the group met to decide their next move, in advance of a state law that would make it illegal to continue to occupy Legislative Plaza. It appears that they've decided to move camp to Metro land, the public square, outside the historic courthouse.

The move is in response to a state law that could be passed this week that would make it a crime to camp on state property without permission, punishable by a $2,500 fine and a year in jail. It's the latest in a series of moves by the state in an attempt to evict the protesters.

The group has been at Legislative Plaza since October 7th, protesting the influence of money on government, and the perceived power of corporations. Members said they are leading a citizen's movement defending Democracy from corporate money and corruption.

"I mean we're talking about income inequity in a way that we haven't before. We're talking about the 1% and the 99%. We're talking about corporate influence in politics you know. I mean none of this was talked about in the scope that it is now," said Elli Whiteway with Occupy Nashville.

Back in October, state police raided the camp in the middle of the night and arrested occupiers. A judge immediately ordered them released
