Hillwood High School Honored

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- It's one of the best career academies in the country and on Thursday Hillwood High School got some national recognition.

Brenda Dann-Messier from the US Department of Education stopped by the school to see why it's working so well and students shared their high school take on Hillwood's program.

Messier also heard from teachers and companies about the career academies success, but she learned that in a system where 70% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch getting a ride or having something to wear to an internship can be a problem.

"Students have to graduate and get on a career pathway that will enable them to get an industry recognized credentials, an associated degree or baccalaureate degree or if they want to go right way into work, that's wonderful too, but they need to be ready for work on day one," sais Messier

One Senior who spoke in today's program has already been accepted to study medicine at George Washington University, remarkable considering three years ago she didn't speak a word of English.
