NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Police said that Mayor Dean's two-year-old niece was killed in an accident Thursday night at her west Nashville home.
Officials said the child's father, 49-year-old Joe Davis, was backing up his SUV in their Ellendale Avenue driveway around 5 p.m. and unknowingly hit his two-year-old daughter, Dugan Davis, who was riding her toddler scooter.
Davis and his wife rushed the child to St. Thomas Hospital. Due to her traumatic injuries, the child was transferred immediately to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital. Police said she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Davis is the brother of Mayor Dean's wife, Anne Davis.
Metro Police Department's Youth Services Division is investigating the accident, along with the traffic unit. Police said they believe this was a tragic accident.
