Shanterrica Madden
Tina Stewart

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – An attorney for a former Middle Tennessee State University student accused of stabbing her roommate to death will file a complaint Wednesday morning against the apartment complex where the stabbing occurred.
Shanterrica Madden, 19, is charged with stabbing MTSU Lady Raiders basketball player Tina Stewart to death inside their apartment at Raiders Crossing on March 2, 2011.
Now, her attorney, Joe Brandon, said Madden acted in self defense, and that the apartment complex is to blame for Stewart's death.
Brandon claims Stewart had at least two other roommates at the complex before being placed with Madden. Brandon said one of those roommates told him Stewart had threatened her.
Madden has previously claimed she felt threatened by Stewart and that she only defended herself with the knife.
A $20 million lawsuit already filed by Stewart family attorney David Raybin also blames the apartment complex for not doing enough to address tensions between Madden and Stewart.
He said Stewart had repeatedly complained about Madden smoking marijuana in the apartment. Raybin said that Stewart was stabbed to death just one hour after a complex security guard had questioned Madden, but then did nothing more.
Prosecutors have charged Madden with first degree murder. The trial is scheduled for May.
