MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. – An autopsy on one of the horses found dead on a Maury County farm last week has come back inconclusive.
The six mares and a stallion were found within 50 feet of each other. Three other horses were unharmed.
Investigators thought botulism poisoning likely was the culprit as the toxin sometimes turns up naturally in rotting hay.
However, tests done by the state agriculture laboratory came back negative for poison.
Police said the horses appeared to be well cared for and foul play was not suspected.
NewsChannel 5 learned of several other dead horses in neighboring counties, who were by all accounts healthy as well.
The state is expected to expand its investigation.
