Fort Campbell Unit Trains For Afghan Advisory Role

Posted: Updated:

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (AP) - Soldiers from Fort Campbell are training this week to prepare for a new mission that will have them serve as advisers to the Afghan security forces.

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, was one of four units called up by the Pentagon to deploy to Afghanistan in small security force assistance teams later this year.

The 18-person teams will be made up of military officers and senior non-commissioned officers along with some Department of Defense civilians. The rest of the brigade will remain at Fort Campbell.

The security force assistance teams are designed to help sustain the Afghan security forces as the U.S. military starts to draw down forces and hand over responsibility to the Afghan government.
