Calvin John Ward was a relatively unknown, decorated World War I veteran who passed away at the age of 68.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On Thursday morning, lawmakers on Capitol Hill paused to remember a man being called "The Most Forgotten War Hero in American History."
Calvin John Ward was a relatively unknown, decorated World War I veteran who passed away at the age of 68.
Ward suffered from shell shock or post-traumatic stress disorder after returning home to Tennessee. He was also the only Medal of Honor Winner to later be dishonorably discharged.
Representative David Hawk said he hopes the House Joint Resolution will not only honor Calvin Ward, but all soldiers struggling with PTSD.
"We hope to bring awareness to not only soldier Ward's life, but also remind folks that our returning soldiers may have some of these issues and challenges that soldier Ward had as well," said Representative Hawk.
Mental Health advocates said the symptoms of PTSD can often be confused with bad behavior or addictions, when the soldier is actually struggling to cope.
