GOP Discuss Need For 'Don't Say Gay' Bill

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - House Speaker Beth Harwell said she's been holding discussions with fellow Republicans about whether to proceed with legislation that would ban the teaching of gay issues to elementary and middle school students.

Harwell told reporters during her weekly press conference in her office on Thursday that she and her colleagues are reviewing the current curriculum "to see if this bill is necessary or if we have unintended consequences with this."

Earlier this week, a vote on the bill was delayed in the House Education Committee after supporters were told of fellow Republican Governor Bill Haslam's concerns. He has said lawmakers should be focused on other issues.

State Education Department spokeswoman Kelli Gauthier said the proposal is "consistent with the state's current curriculum as established by the state Board of Education."
