Investigation Reveals Murfreesboro Officers' Unethical Conduct

Posted: Updated:

MURFREESBORO, Tenn.- One Murfreesboro police officer has been fired and another demoted after an internal investigation revealed the officers' unethical conduct.

Murfreesboro Police released information regarding former Officer Mike Fowler and Sergeant Amy Dean on Friday.

Reports found that in January Officer Fowler had attempted to remove a pistol that was in the police evidence room and add it to his personal gun collection. Fowler was also found to have lied about the incident when questioned by fellow officers.

"We do not accept the argument that you were following the directions of an Evidence Technician as part of the basis for your actions" said a letter from Police Chief Glenn Chrisman " We do not believe there is any credible explanation for your actions, which have irreparably damaged your credibility as a Murfreesboro police officer,"

Fowler was terminated on Friday.

Letters released on Friday also explained the demotion of Sergeant Amy Dean. Dean was found to be assisting a friend in selling counterfeit UGG Boots to police department employees and on the grounds of the department. Dean, a 21-year-veteran of the force claimed that she had only been the middle man in the sale of the items, but investigators found that she was aware of the inauthenticity of the products.

"Statements provided by different department employees indicated that you were unwilling to vouch for their authenticity and at one point stated that you were not selling them as real," said Police Chief Glenn Chrisman in a letter to Dean.

Dean was demoted from the rank of Sergeant to Police Officer with a salary decrease.

Both Fowler and Dean's changes were effective Friday.
