US 68 Bridge In Kentucky Hit By Barge

Posted: Updated:

CANTON, Ky. (AP) - A bridge that carries U.S. 68 from Canton to Land Between the Lakes has been reopened after inspection.

The bridge over Lake Barkley was closed early Monday after a barge tow captain reported striking a support with enough force that a barge was taking on water. That occurred at 1:15 a.m. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says an inspector was able to determine there was no structural damage and the bridge was reopened before dawn.

The bridge is about 9 miles east of the US 68/KY 80 Eggners Ferry Bridge that has been closed since the night of January 26th when the Cargo Ship Delta Mariner hit a 322 ft. span of the structure knocked it into Kentucky Lake.
