MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Groundbreaking for the new Amazon fulfillment center in Murfreesboro was held Thursday.
State, local and company officials all gathered at the future site
of Amazon's new fulfillment center.
Paul Latture with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce said it took a lot of time and effort to snag a company like Amazon.
"I think the best part of our job is when we come back here in
about six months and we see the 1,100 people and those families and those
individuals who have an employment and
an opportunity to better themselves and to better their families and to make a
good honest living here in Rutherford County and Murfreesboro," said Latture.
Amazon will also build a fulfillment center in Lebanon. The distribution centers are expected to create some 1,300 new jobs, and bring millions of dollars to the local economy.
Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. agreed to a deal last year to expand its presence in the state, but that would require Amazon to start collecting Tennessee sales taxes in 2014.
Both the Lebanon and Murfreesboro fulfillment centers should be up
and running by next fall.
