Gaylord Opryland Installing Flood Wall Protection

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Officials with Gaylord Opryland said a flood wall protection is near completion that should shield them from suffering damage like the 2010 floods for the next 500 years.

Like Opry Mills, Opryland Hotel and the Grand Ole Opry suffered major damage during the May flood.

"That May 2nd flood was devastating of course and where we are at, we would have been under several feet of water," said Brian Abrahamson with Gaylord Entertainment.

The vwater that filled the hotel's famed atriums left millions of dollars in damages and set a plan in motion to keep an event like this from happening again.

"We spent about $12 million on this flood water system to ensure the safety of this hotel and the hotel was protected above the hundred year flood plain before and now we'd be protected above the 500 year event," Abrahamson added.

The walls surrounding the iconic resort may look unassuming enough.

"If you go along these walkways, most people wouldn't know that's what it is intended for," he explained.

Abrahamson said when it is complete it will look like a brick privacy wall.

"This is the poured concrete of the flood wall. This is part concrete, and it's done in a brick pattern to match this brick and it will be ultimately stained to match that brick," he continued.

But in actuality, the purpose is quite obvious.

"On these open walkways, we have a stop log system where these metal logs, they're made of aluminum into these slacks and these inserts and we have warning of a flood, then we'll be able to insert these stop logs all the way up and make this entry way completely water tight," said Abrahmson.

When complete, the flood wall protection system will stand 30 inches taller than the flood event. The project is expected to be complete June 2.
