Humphrey’s Co. Sheriff Suing For Defamation

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The Humphrey's County Sheriff has filed a lawsuit against the public defender for defamation for statements made in an email about a case of a man beaten by deputies in his front yard.

The lawsuit was filed against Jake Lockert, the attorney representing Darrin Ring. Ring is the man who was beaten and tased by deputies in the front yard of his Humphreys county home. The incident occurred in January 2011.

Sheriff Chris Davis is now suing the public defender, accusing him of making defamatory and untrue statements regarding the sheriff in an email written about the Ring beating. Sheriff Davis claims in a lawsuit that Jake Lockert's account of that night portrayed him as a "corrupt law enforcement officer", which caused him "great emotional distress" at the loss of his reputation.

Two of Davis' deputies were also indicted on federal charges of violating Ring's civil rights.
