House Speaker Says Parking Lot Guns Bill Is Dead

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - House Speaker Beth Harwell said a bill seeking to guarantee workers' right to store firearms in vehicles parked at work has likely died for the year.

The Nashville Republican told reporters on Thursday that she has been informed by her Senate counterpart Ron Ramsey that the bill will not be scheduled for a vote in the upper chamber.

A Ramsey spokesman referred to comments he made to the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce a day earlier, in which the Blountville Republican said he was still seeking a compromise.

Property rights issues related to the parking lot guns measure have put Republicans in the crossfire between gun advocates and the business lobby.

The latest Senate version of the bill would apply to people with handgun carry permits and hunting licenses.
