NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee State University has promoted Travis Williams to head coach of the men's basketball team.

Williams has served as assistant coach for the team for the past three years under former head coach, John Cooper. Cooper accepted the head coaching job at Miami (Ohio) last week.

Williams was hired at TSU in 2009. Before that, he was the head coach of the Dongguan Parklane Snow Wolf Professional Basketball Club of the NBL in China, as well as head coach at Fort Valley State University, and assistant coach at his alma mater Gerogia State.

TSU had a 20-13 record in 2011-12, which included a trip to the championship game of the Ohio Valley Conference tournament. The Tigers lost to Murray State 57-54 in the finals.

The season also included their first post-season tournament appearance since 1994 in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. TSU lost to Mercer 68-60.
