CLINTON, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Valley Authority has acquired 155 acres, including 24 homes, in the Claxton community for an expansion of a coal ash landfill.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reported that residents who earlier voiced strong opposition to the expansion now say they are resigned to what seems inevitable.
TVA needs the land for a 50-foot-high mound of coal ash and gypsum because it is running out of storage space at its Bull Run Fossil Plant.
TVA executive John Kammeyer said the landfill will have a 500-foot buffer zone that will be planted with trees.
Once filled to capacity, the ash storage area will become a grassy mound that will blend into an adjoining ridgeline.
While TVA has bought the properties, the landfill has not yet been approved.
