Former Sheriff Faces Attempted Murder Charges

Posted: Updated:

JACKSON, Tenn. - A man with a history in law enforcement is now facing kidnapping and attempted murder charges after police said he forced his estranged wife out of a bar at gunpoint.

Police said Ricky Lunsford, 52, approached his estranged wife with a gun at the Tap Bar and Grill in Jackson on Saturday night.

In the parking lot, she tried to run away. Police said he fired a number of shots at her, but she ducked behind cars and was not hit by the gunfire. Several cars were damaged.

Officers recovered two handguns from Lunsford. He was charged with aggravated kidnapping, attempted murder, aggravated domestic assault, and four counts of reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon.

He was being held at the Madison County Jail on $200,000 bond. Lunsford is scheduled to be in court Monday morning.

Lunsford was the Henderson County sheriff from 2000 to 2006 and a Madison County sheriff's deputy in 2009 and 2010.
