Tuesday Marks Two Years Since May 2010 Flood

Posted: Updated:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tuesday marks the two year anniversary one of the biggest natural disasters to hit Middle Tennessee.

Nineteen inches of rain fell on the first two days of May 2010. The Cumberland River crested at a level it hadn't seen since 1937.

Twenty-one deaths were recorded in Tennessee, including ten here in Nashville.

Damage estimates in Nashville totaled $1.5 billion, not including damage to roads, bridges, public buildings, or anything inside those buildings and homes.

Approximately 10,940 residential, commercial and public structures were damaged during the flood. More than half that number had between two to six feet of flood water inside them.

At least 30 counties in Tennessee were declared major disaster areas by the federal government.

More than 125,000 volunteers pitched in during the weeks that followed the flood to help clean up.
