JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- A former Jackson, Tenn., police officer has been indicted by a county grand jury on a charge of falsely reporting that he was shot by unknown assailants while on patrol.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said 29-year-old Travis Hass, now residing in Rossville, Ga., was arrested Wednesday in Chattanooga.

He is accused of reporting in June 2010 that he had been shot outside a wholesale meat company in Jackson after struggling with two attackers over his gun.

Hass was shot four times including twice in his bulletproof vest, but TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm said Wednesday he is believed to have shot himself. Hass later resigned from the police department.
