George Lindsey “Goober” Dies at 83

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- The man known as Goober Pyle has passed away. George Lindsey died Sunday morning in Nashville after a long illness. Lindsey has a strong ties to NewsChannel 5 because of the time he spent on the show "Hee Haw" which was filmed in NewsChannel 5 studios.

Lindsey made his first appearance on "Hee Haw" in October 1971 and stayed with the show until it ended in 1992, but he was most famous for his portrayal of Goober Pyle on the "Andy Griffith Show."

Griffith issued a statement saying, "George Lindsey was my friend. I had great respect for his talent and his human spirit. I am happy to say that as we found ourselves in our eighties, we were not afraid to say, 'I love you.' That was the last thing George and I had to say to each other. 'I love you.'"

George Lindsey was 83-year-old. Funeral arraignments have not been completed.
