LA VERGNE, Tenn. – A woman was burned in a house fire in La Vergne on Wednesday afternoon.
Fire crews reported heavy smoke when they got on the scene on Ridgemont Drive off Jefferson Pike just before 12:30 p.m.
Officials said the fire started as a grease fire on the closed-in back porch. The bamboo ceiling of the porch caught fire and spread to the attic of the home.
Assistant Fire Chief Rick McCormick said the women did a good thing by turning the stove off, but when she carried the burning pot out of the area it caused the fire to spread to the rest of the home.
Firefighters said there was extensive damage to the back patio area and the attic of the home.
The 50-year-old woman inside the home was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with first, second and third degree burns. She was listed in critical condition.
Her name and age were not released.
