Community Rallies Around Firefighter Battling Cancer

CUNNINGHAM, Tenn. - A volunteer firefighter battling lung cancer is getting some much needed support from her fellow firefighters.

In February, Kim Burns learned she had stage 4 lung cancer.  She immediately started chemotherapy and radiation treatments, and now needs the constant support of an oxygen tank.

"It's been rough," said Burns. "I have good days and bad days."

As a 14-year veteran of the Cunningham Volunteer Fire Department, her co-workers wanted to do something to ease her burden.

They raised money and spent countless hours making much needed repairs to her home. Now, she has new furniture, doors, and a ramp for easier access.  Firefighters said it was the least they could do for a woman who has done so much for her community.

"We just want to be able to say to the community, we stood by our own," said former Chief of the Cunningham Volunteer Fire Department June Leftwich.

"It went from a little project to a big deal pretty quick," said firefighter Brandon McCurdy. "It is awesome how people came along to help."

Burns said the effort brought her some much needed encouragement.

"It gives me a boost," said Burns. "I am trying to keep my spirits up.  I am trying to fight this."

Volunteer firefighters said they will continue to raise money for  Burns.  Anyone who wants to help can contact them at Cunningham Volunteer Fire Station 16.
