NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- A teenager said he is lucky to be alive after surviving a road rage attack on Interstate 40.
Michael Butt and two passengers were driving on I-40 after dark this past weekend near Bellevue when another vehicle pulled up next to them and suddenly a hammer shattered the driver-side window.
"It came through the window and hit me and I'm looking at the window and it's shattered everywhere," said Butt who was driving the car. The vehicle swerved, but did not crash.
"He told me to grab the wheel so I grabbed the wheel and kept us between the lines," said Nick Howk, who was in the passenger seat.
Butt said they were traveling at more than 70 miles per hour.
Using a description provided by Butt and his two passengers, Metro police arrested 18-year-old William Garton.
He is accused of throwing the hammer from one vehicle to the other and is charged with aggravated assault using a deadly weapon, and vandalism.
Butt said this was not a random act of road rage. He said that Garton is an acquaintance and they had disagreements in the past. Butt said he has no idea why Garton attacked him on the interstate.
